PERFORMANCE GUIDE

DAY MAKEUP

PREPARATION

 

  • Assemble tools, supplies and products

  • Set up workstation

  • Wash your hands

CLIENT/SKIN PREPARATION

1. Cleanse, tone, moisturize and protect skin:

  • Cleanse skin to remove any residual makeup

  • Use toner to restore pH

  • Apply moisturizer

  • Use sunscreen to protect skin

2. Analyze skin and facial features:

  • Determine skin tone

  • Determine type of skin (normal, dry, oily, combination)

  • Assess face, eyebrow, eye and lip shapes

3. Drape client and position headband at hairline to keep hair off face.

4. Groom eyebrows if needed:

  • Brush eyebrows

  • Shape eyebrows following general guidelines

    • Begin on inside corner of eye

    • Peak occurs over outside iris of eye

    • End at outside of eye

  • Tweeze if required

 

 

FACE – CONCEALER AND FOUNDATION 

5. Select concealer and foundation color:

  • Test color along jawline

6. Apply concealer with camouflage brush to areas that have shadows or discolorations:

  • Form half-moon shape over inside corner of both eyes

  • Create triangular shape around both sides of nasal fold

  • Blend with sponge

  • Apply under both eyes close to lashline

  • Blend eye area toward bridge of nose

  • Use minimal pressure

7. Apply foundation with camouflage brush to cheek area, forehead, nose and chin.

8. Blend foundation with sponge using stippling technique: 

  • Blend each section outward before moving on

  • Use gentle pressure; too much pressure can result in broken capillaries

  • Color should blend or fade away into hairline and neck

  • Avoid any lines of demarcation

Note: Remember to include foundation color on the earlobes and lips.

EYES – EYELINER AND EYE SHADOW

Optional: Apply and blend shadow primer or base to eyelid prior to color application.

9. Shade or fill in eyebrows using colored powder and brush or pencil:

  • Begin on inside corner of eye

  • Work toward peak of arch

  • Narrow shape of eyebrow toward outside corner

  • Use small hair-like strokes

  • Use sponge to clean and refine line of brow

  • Brush both brows

  • Check for symmetry

10. Apply eyeliner to upper and lower lashline:

  • Lift eyelid upward using thumb positioned under eyebrow

  • Use short strokes from center of lashline outward

  • Use detail angle brush to soften and blend line

  • Check for symmetry

11. Apply eye shadow to crease area using a patting motion:

  • Blend and soften eye shadow with blending brush

  • Use very little pressure to protect eye area

Note: Eye shadow can also be applied prior to eyeliner.

FACE – FACIAL POWDER 

12. Apply tinted or translucent facial powder throughout face and neck using large powder brush:

  • Smooth powder over face using pat-and-roll motion

  • Avoid eyelids and eyelashes

 

EYES – MASCARA 

Optional: An eyelash curler may be used prior to application of mascara:

  • Position eyelashes in between eyelash curler pads

  • Gently close the eyelash curler for a few seconds

  • Open and release

13. Apply mascara with disposable mascara wand:

  • Hold eyelid upward and instruct client to look down

  • Place wand horizontally along base of lashes

  • Move wand upward and outward from base to ends of lashes

  • Use an eyelash separator to separate and define lashes

CHEEKS – BLUSH 

14. Apply powder blush using a C-shaped motion from temple to cheekbone with fan brush.

Note: Cream, liquid or gel blush is applied prior to facial powder. Blush may be applied prior to mascara.

LIPS – LIP COLOR

15. Define shape of lips with lipliner:

  • Use small strokes working from outside corner toward center

  • Outline upper lip

  • Outline lower lip

Note: You may choose to brace the hand under the chin to steady the application.

16. Apply and blend lip color using sanitizable or disposable lip brush. 

COMPLETION

 

  • Discard single-use supplies

  • Disinfect tools and multi-use supplies

  • Disinfect workstation and arrange in proper order

SKIN PREPARATION

4. Groom brows if needed. 

5. Select concealer and foundation color. 

6. Apply and blend concealer.

7. Apply and blend foundation.

8. Shade or fill in eyebrows.

EYES – EYELINER AND EYE SHADOW

9. Apply darker eyeliner along entire upper lashline for more depth of color:

  • Use small strokes

10. Repeat eyeliner application on opposite eye.

11. Blend eyeliner on both eyes with small detail brush:

  • Balance both eyes

12. Apply darker eye shadow color using dabbing technique to achieve a more intense concentration of color.

13. Blend eye shadow upward with brush:

  • Contour in the crease and slightly beyond for more dramatic effect

  • Avoid harsh line

  • Check for symmetry

14. Extend darker eye shadow color under eyes to add emphasis.

15. Apply liquid liner for a more defined and dramatic look.

Note: Mascara application is usually heavier for evening.

LIPS – LIP COLOR

16. Apply darker lip color for a stronger, more defined mouth:

Create a harmonious, good balance of color

Note: A stronger cheek color may also be needed.

COMPLETION

 

  • Discard single-use supplies

  • Avoid any lines of demarcation

EYES – BROW PENCIL AND EYE SHADOW

10. Fill in and shape eyebrows using a brow pencil:

  • Begin on inside corner of eye

  • Work toward peak of arch

  • Narrow shape of eyebrow toward outside corner

  • Use small hair-like strokes

  • Brush to soften lines

  • Check for symmetry

Note: Highly pigmented skin can cause makeup colors to appear to be faded or washed out if colors are too muted or sparingly applied.

11. Apply eye shadow with brush:

  • Darker tones to outer corners

  • Lighter tones to inner corners

  • Blend and soften to avoid harsh lines

12. Repeat eye shadow application on opposite eye:

  • Check for symmetry

CHEEKS – BLUSH

13. Apply blush to cheeks to add color:

  • Use a fan brush

  • Create C-shaped motion from temple to cheekbone

LIPS – LIP COLOR

14. Redraw shape of lips with lipliner:

  • Draw inside natural lip if minimizing size of mouth is desired

  • Use small strokes working from outside corner toward center

  • Outline upper lip

  • Outline lower lip

Note: You may choose to brace the hand under the chin to steady the application.

15. Apply and blend lip color to create a harmonious balance through the entire face:

  • Darker lip color can be used for a stronger, more defined mouth

COMPLETION

 

  • Discard single-use supplies

  • Disinfect tools and multi-use supplies
