Applying Foundation: Fingers, Sponge or Brush?

Using Your Fingers

Fingertips are great tools when it comes to applying makeup. When using your fingers to apply liquid and cream foundations, the warmth of your hands helps to warm up the pigment which makes it easier to blend into the skin. However, be sure that your hands are clean before applying foundation in this way.

Using A Sponge

Sponges are great if you want an even coverage that is not too heavy – they absorb a lot of product so the intensity of the foundation will be taken down a bit. Pressing lightly into the skin in a blotting motion gives even coverage without any streaks (or ‘sweeping’ as this will create streaks!). To achieve a dewier look, dampen the sponge before dipping it into the foundation; this helps create an even sheerer look. However, using sponges means that you will go through your product much quicker – so use sparingly on days where minimal coverage is needed. Keep in mind that if you have a long-wear, water-resistant, transfer-resistant foundation such as my Hi-Def Foundation, you will need to use a dry sponge.

Using A Brush

For those who want more control over their application and an even deposit of pigment on their face, then using a brush can help achieve this goal! For liquid foundations choose a tapered synthetic brush with soft bristles for blending; for powder foundations use a firm-bristled brush for better control over where and how much pigment is applied. Brushes also provide more precision – ideal if you have areas such as around your nose or eyes that need extra attention when applying foundation. The downside is that brushes take longer than other methods as they require more time to blend out evenly; however, once mastered they provide flawless coverage!

As a professional, I will admit that I do often use a combination of tools to get the results that I desire, so use a sponge after applying your foundation with your fingers or brushes.

There are many factors to consider when deciding which method to use for applying foundation – from desired effect, amount of product used and speed of application - so make sure you do your research before investing in any products! Whether you decide to use your fingertips, sponge or brush - there are pros and cons associated with each method - but ultimately it's down to personal preference as what works best for one person may not necessarily work best for another! So experiment and find out what works best for you! What’s your favorite method? Tell me in the comments below!
